Why propolis became K-beauty's favourite gentle antibacterial

Propolis is the resinous material honeybees collect from tree buds and use to seal their hives. In skincare it arrives as an extract dense in flavonoids and phenolic acids — the same compounds responsible for its antibacterial and antioxidant behaviour in the hive.

What makes it interesting for skin is the combination: mild antibacterial action against C. acnes alongside humectant sugars that leave the barrier feeling cushioned rather than stripped. That's unusual. Most ingredients that address breakouts do so by drying the skin out.

We look for extracts standardised to a stated flavonoid content, formulated above 10% and paired with a non-comedogenic base. Anything vaguer than that tends to be marketing rather than formulation.

If your skin is reactive and you've had to abandon salicylic acid, a propolis-led essence is usually the gentlest place to restart.
